Where:

  • Midnight Peak

When:

  • March 19, 2022

Who:

  • Ed, Craig, Dave, Kirk, Diane, Roger, Oak, Jane, Luna, Peter, Lisa, Rod, Shonda, Bauer, Gerard, Mike, Brenda, Kent, Colleen

Trailhead:

  • heading west from Calgary, take Highway 40 south
  • follow 40 south for 14.2 km, and the Baldy Pass parking lot is on the right (west) side of the road
  • from the parking lot, the trailhead is across the highway and slightly to the right

Degree of difficulty:

  • 725 meters elevation to about halfway up the ridge towards the summit
  • 10 km round trip
  • 3.5 hours total time on the trail
  • the trail starts on a broad trail through the forest along a moderately graded trail
  • after 800 meters, take the left fork towards Baldy Pass
  • as the forest thins out, the trail becomes steeper all the way to the Midnight Peak Ridge and beyond to the summit

Interesting notes:

  • the trail offers panoramic views of Wasootch Peak, Mount Kidd, Nakiska and Mount Allan, Mount Collembola, Mount Lorette, and Barrier Lake
  • this trail also leads to the three peaks of Mt. Baldy
  • Midnight Peak is named after a group of Rocky Mountain Ramblers who attempted to descend via an alternate route, but their choice left them stranded atop cliffs, and they ultimately made it down safely but did not reach their cars until midnight
