Nova Scotia Trip

When did we go….

  • June 8-13, 2026

Why did we go…

  • visiting our good friends Diane and Dave (and their kids KJ and Paul) in Chester and Jane and Mike in Halifax

How did we get there…

  • 5 hour direct Westjet flight to Halifax
  • 45 minute drive to our Air Bnb in Chester

Where did we stay…

  • Air BnB in Chester at 13 King Street
  • centrally located in the heart of Chester
  • loft above a garage that was a decent size but had very squeaky floors and a few other quirks like only one small mirror and no closets

Where did we eat:

  • Fo’c’sle Pub (dinner, Chester local pub, decent food, ambiance, and service)
  • Kiwi Café (breakfast every morning in Chester, big menu, good quality and friendly service)
  • Squadron Yacht Club (dinner, yacht club in Halifax, historic venue, good food and service)
  • DaD (lunch, our friends Diane & Dave’s place in Chester, lovely soup and snacks on their front porch)
  • The Rope Loft (dinner & lunch, local historic pub on the water in Chester decent food and service)
  • Half Shell Oyster Bar (lunch, Lunenburg overlooking the harbor, excellent food and service)
  • Chester Golf Course (dinner, great views of the Chester Bay, average food but good service)

What did we do…

  • walked around Chester enjoying the historic houses and ocean views
  • went into Halifax to see our friend Mike & Jane’s house and then went down to the pier to dig up some interesting family history at Pier 21 and then walked the promenade
  • went to the SENSEA Spa which was a very nice hydrotherapy spa located 5 minutes outside of Chester on Stanford Lake with tons of amenities
  • drove along the coast to Peggy’s Cove which is a beautiful historic seaside fishing village settled in 1811 and is known for it’s iconic lighthouse, granite bedrock and Maritime folklore
  • toured the towns (Mahone Bay – known for its iconic ‘Three Churches’ ocean view and Lunenburg – UNESCO World Heritage site) south of Chester and explored The Ovens Natural Park where we ran into Harry Chapin’s brother Steve who was building a deck over the ocean
  • walked around Graves Island Provincial Park with Diane
  • attended a ‘Rum Shack Party’ with our friends Dianne & Dave at a local Chester couples house with an incredible group of eclectic neighbors with amazing worldly stories

Background:

  • the Chester Basin is home to around 2000 people and is affectionally known as the ‘Riviera of the East’ and hosts Canada’s largest keelboat regatta the Chester Race Week
  • Halifax is the most populous city in Atlantic Canada with a population of 350,000 people

What did we not do that is on the agenda for next time:

  • explore more towns around the province

Final thoughts:

  • the weather was quite pleasant with temperatures ranging from 10-25C
  • it was great to see two sets of good friends
