Grouse Grind Trail

Where:

  • Grouse Grind Trail

When:

  • September 2, 2020

Who:

  • Ed

Trailhead:

  • 20-minute drive from my hotel in downtown Vancouver (Westin Bayshore)
  • the trailhead is on the right-hand side of the road just past the parking lot on the same side of the road
  • there is parking on the left-hand side as well, and both lots require payment

Degree of difficulty:

  • 853 meters of elevation gain
  • 2.9 km one way
  • the trail is straight up the whole way, so it is a challenging trail and is often referred to as Mother Nature’s Stairmaster
  • you need to be able to keep your heart rate in the upper range for 60 minutes or thereabouts
  • the trail is a combination of dirt, rocks and wooden steps

Interesting notes:

  • I did the hike in 64 minutes, which was disappointing as I wanted to be under an hour
  • you are in a tree canopy for most of the hike, but the views at the top are very scenic looking back over Vancouver and the ocean
  • after you hike the trail, you can take the gondola down the mountain instead of hiking back down (book online ahead of time)
  • the official record holder did the hike in 23 minutes and 48 seconds
  • each year more than 100,000 people hike the trail
  • dogs are not allowed on the trail
