Canine Chat

What type of dog are you and what is your breed known for?

I am a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and we are known for our ability to lure waterfowl within gunshot range.  Because of this people often refer to us as ‘tollers’.  We are the smallest of the retriever family of dogs, and people often mistake us for a small Golden Retriever.  I am proud to say that we are intelligent, easy to please, alert and high-energy dogs.  Do not be fooled by the ‘Retriever’ in my breed name as retrieving is not really my thing as I have more important things in my life to do.

Where are you from?

I was born in La Ronge, Saskatchewan.

My birth mom’s name is Misti (unfortunately she passed away a few years ago).

My birth dad’s name is Picasso, and he lives in Kelowna.

How did you get your name?

My owner’s fathers names were ‘Jack’ and ‘Ace’, so they jammed them together to come up with ‘Jace’.

How old are you?

I am almost ten years old.

You divide your time between Calgary, Canmore, and Kelowna.  What do you do in these places?

In Calgary, I hang on the front window bench or our front porch in our Kensington neighborhood and watch people stroll by as well as going for walks in my neighborhood either along the river or up on Crescent Hill.

In Canmore, I like to go into the backcountry with my dad’s Edventure crew for long hikes and snowshoes.

In Kelowna, I like to go for walks, hang out on the beach, go for boat rides, swim in the lake, and ride on the paddleboard.

I hear you have a horrendous bark.  Why do you bark so loud at people?

Well, I don’t really know, but it is sort of my signature move so to speak.  It is fun to watch my dad, even after ten years, jump out of his skin when I do my loud barking.  My mom tries to get me to stop, but I don’t always pay attention to her.

What brought you joy this week?

I went for some nice walks around our neighborhood and enjoyed some warmer winter weather.
