Mist Mountain Hot Springs and Eagle Ridge

Where:

  • Mist Mountain Hot Springs and Eagle Ridge

When:

  • July 12, 2025

Where:

  • Ed, Dave, Craig, Janet, Neil, Kardy, Brenda, Lisa, Peter, Angela, Roger

Trailhead:

  • on Highway 40, drive south from the Trans-Canada Highway for 81 km (1 hour) or 15 km south of the Highwood Pass
  • the parking area is on the East side of the road, either in the ditch right at the trailhead or just south on a turnoff parking area
  • if you are coming from the north and get to the Picklejar parking lot, you have gone too far and need to backtrack

Degree of difficulty:

  • 8.8 km (with side diversion partway up Eagle Ridge)
  • 725 meters (500 meters to the hot springs)
  • 3 and a half hours total time on the trail
  • the trail starts through a wooded area with a steep climb of 450 meters over 2.5 km towards the saddle between Mist Mountain and Eagle Ridge
  • it meanders through a dense evergreen forest before you hit the open meadow below the pass
  • after this climb, the trail levels off on a scree path to the hot pools along the left side of the pass along Mist Mountain
  • there are a few tricky spots as you get close to the hot spring pools
  • after the hot springs, we backtracked to the pass, and then a few of us turned left (east) up towards Eagle Ridge

Interesting notes:

  • the two hot spring pools are very unique and popular with the social media crowd, so you may have to wait a bit to get your turn to dip, although we got in right away
  • they are Southern Alberta’s only undeveloped natural hot springs
  • it’s best to wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a drying towel (there is nowhere to change discreetly
  • the view from the pools is very panoramic and provides a great Nordic like experience
  • Mist Mountain trail branches off this trail just before the hot springs and is 3 km and 700 meters further
  • Mist Mountain is named for the frequent mist and cloud conditions that shroud the summit
  • Eagle Ridge is also named Nameless Ridge due to not having an official name in the guidebooks
